Unauthorized Immigrants in the U.S

By Jeffrey S. Passel and Jens Manuel Krogstad

Living in the U.S. without legal authorization can be very challenging for immigrants. According to the latest research from the Pew Research Center, the unauthorized immigrant population in the U.S. grew to 11 million in 2022, up from 10.5 million the year before. This marks the first time in years that the population has increased after a long decline between 2007 and 2019.

However, the number of unauthorized immigrants is still below the peak of 12.2 million in 2007. So, what does this mean for the people living without legal status in the U.S.? Let’s break down the reality they face.

The Challenges Unauthorized Immigrants Face

Unauthorized immigrants often face significant disadvantages in their daily lives. The lack of legal status limits access to essential services like healthcare, education, and even the ability to work legally. This creates a constant sense of insecurity for individuals and their families.

Moreover, many unauthorized immigrants live in fear of being detained or deported. With U.S. border encounters reaching record numbers, it’s clear that more people are trying to make their way into the country, but once here, the challenges don’t end.

While some may have entered through programs like the Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan (CHNV) program or the Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) initiative, these individuals still face challenges in obtaining legal status, even if they’ve been granted temporary permission to stay.

Who Are Unauthorized Immigrants?

Unauthorized immigrants come from all over the world. The largest group still comes from Mexico, though their numbers have been decreasing. In 2022, there were 4.0 million unauthorized immigrants from Mexico, down from 6.9 million in 2007. At the same time, immigrants from places like the Caribbean, South America, Asia, and Africa are increasing.

Despite the challenges they face, many unauthorized immigrants are working in the U.S. In 2022, approximately 8.3 million unauthorized immigrants were part of the workforce. They play a crucial role in industries like agriculture, construction, and services. However, their lack of legal status means they are often taken advantage of and do not enjoy the same protections as other workers.

Living in “Mixed-Status” Households

Many unauthorized immigrants live in households with U.S. citizens or lawful immigrants. In fact, about 86% of households with unauthorized immigrants include either the householder or their spouse as unauthorized immigrants. These families often face unique challenges. For example, there are about 4.4 million U.S.-born children living with unauthorized immigrant parents. These children often face emotional and legal stress because their parents' legal status is uncertain.
